TMR Yearbook: Class of 2016 – Anna Beeton

My name is Anna and I have recently started the This Mum Runs Couch to 5K Absolute Beginners course at Royal Victoria Park, Bath.

Anna Beeton, TMR Mum

I have two children, a 3.5 year old and a 10 month old.  I’m definitely in the lazy camp and don’t do any real kind of exercise apart from running after the kids.  I have got into the habit of eating too much and doing very little so I am carrying some extra weight!

I don’t want to be a mum who can’t run around with her kids and also want to be a positive role model for them with exercise being a big part of our family life so I’m hoping this is a step in the right direction.  Already my son is enjoying coming out with me!
I’m an event manager at the University of Bath.  We moved to Bath from London 2 years ago.

I heard about This Mum Runs from a friend and joined the Facebook group, although I lurked for a while before signing up for the couch to 5k. I had wanted to join the course for ages, but kept hovering over the booking page and never quite had the guts to go for it.  I wanted to get fit after having my second child, but lacked any kind of motivation.  I hoped that exercising in a group would help me keep going.

I decided to just go for it as I had nothing to lose.  My daughter is 10 months and I was in need of some serious ‘me’ time.  Running wouldn’t be my first choice as I’m a self-confessed hater of running and have never been very good at it in the past. But I thought I’d give it a go and see if I could learn to love it like many women on the Facebook page.

On my first session, I was glad to hear that I wasn’t the only one in the group to hate running!  I enjoyed the camaraderie of the group and liked chatting as we ran/walked – it made the session go really quickly and took the focus away from running.  I tend to have an internal monologue when running on my own which goes a bit like:

‘I hate this, I can’t do this, I can’t breathe, my legs hurt, I hate running’!

But this doesn’t happen on the group runs – it still happens a bit when I run on my own, but I finished the first session feeling like I could do it and that feeling has stayed with me each week.  It’s sometimes quite tough to get out but I never regret a run now!

Since I have started the course I have noticed I have more energy, I can run further than I thought and I’m enjoying the gradual build up to more running each week.

What motivates me to keep running is the time by myself, the fact I feel better, am getting fitter and have more energy.

The best thing about the TMR Facebook group is that I find the other ladies really supportive.  I was a bit intimidated at first as they all looked so fit and professional (which of course they are!) but they are also mums just like me!

My advice to anyone who isn’t a member of the This Mum Runs community would be to get involved.  I am not a runner and didn’t think I could do it, but I am, I can and I feel supported to keep going.
